What shall we use
To fill the empty spaces
Where we used to talk?
How shall I fill
The final places?
How should I complete the wall

Festival, festival, festival y otro festival.

The Stranger in me.

Secret Societies

Have you ever wondered what happened to all those freaks and weird people you knew when you were at school? Last summer I found out a possible solution to that problem.
It was a disgusting rainy dumpy summer evening and I had no plans, so I decided to attend a random conference whose title was 'Secret Societies'.
When I got to the conference place (pub) I found a complete freak show and I was very close to turn back and go home but my curiosity made me stay to see what was going to happen.
They are a big bunch of people that are free thinkers and know a lot about politics, economics, history and everything in general, so it is very difficult to have a conversation rather than a monologue.
One of the event organisers has written several books, including 'A brief History of Secret Societies'. From his conference it seemed that he wasn't going to attack or defend any particular sect or group but describe and analise their origin and their current status.
I got his book and soon I confirmed my guess. It was a non bias piece of information that turn out to be quite interesting in some parts and a bit dull in other ones.
Several aspects caught my eye in this book. I'm describing here 4 of them:
  1. Early versions of Egyptian mythology says the creator god Atum-Re masturbated to create life. In fact there is a broad amount of sexuality in Egyptian mythology. When Christianity saw this, they took a complete radical opposite reaction that could have evolved ot the current point of view that Christianity has towards sexuality.
  2. The fact that most of the sects, cults and religions believe that there is only one truth and that they alone have the truth.
  3. The concept of equality between men and women has existed in some cults since the middle ages.
  4. It seems that humans have a constant search to stick out and be unique somehow, this leads to the creation of sects and different groups. Some of them quite hidden and sealed.

It was worth going to the conference and in fact I would like assist to more but I never manage to remember on time to go.

All creatures great and small

I was a bit sad to finish reading the book 'All creatures great and small' by James Herriot. It is a set of mini real life anecdotes of a graduate vet in the 30's in the Yorkshire Dales. When I first started the book I thought it was going to be one of those books that I have to force myself to read, but very quickly it got lots of momentum and I couldn't stop reading it. It is one of these books that makes you cry and laugh, probably because it targets a topic that most people like: animals.

The book managed to make me remember my childhood and the several school holidays I spent in my grand father's farm. I could just picture the pigs, cows, chickens and dogs being given medicines and the harshness and true heart of the country side people.

There are lots of things I would like to highlight of the book, but one of them that was left in my mind was him being thankful to spring and the lambing season, when he didn't have to rub his arms in freezing water mixed with antiseptic and specially having patients that were not stronger than him.

From a long time I have been wanting to visit York and a bit of the country side of northern England, where people are friendly and there are stunning landscapes. The descriptions that I read in this book have convinced me completely about this and I will definitely be going up north this summer.

Newton Faulkner

The Witches

I was highly entertained by The Witches, an amazing piece of work written by Roald Dahl. Before J. K. Rowling invaded the minds of kids with stolen stories, Roald Dahl managed to create amazing pieces of work for children. Quite a few of them have even reached the cinemas as they are quite extraordinary (Matilda, Charlie and the chocolate factory, James and the giant peach).

At some points you actually get to think how twisted his mind should have been, as he was able to create evil characters that were perverse to children and still thousands of kids enjoyed and devoured his books.

It was an easy to read book that teaches children not to trust friendly ladies with gloves and big nostrils as they might be witches. There are in fact 8 things to look for in order to recognise a witch. Also gives the accurate advice to children to avoid having baths very often, as the fresh smell of clean children drives witches mad due to the unbearable fragrance.

A couple of years ago I read also by Roald Dahl two of his autobiographies. Going solo and Boy - Tales of childhood. He narrates his life from his childhood growing up as the son of a Norwegian couple in Wales, going to boarding school, and then, getting a job that allowed him to explore the wilderness of the world. He ended up in Africa when the war exploded were he joined the RAF (Royal AirForce).

If you feel like being entertain by some unconventional easy to read book, pick up one of Dahl's masterpieces.

ps. I have been travelling on trains for 3 hours a day in the last few weeks, that should explain why the latests posts are book related.

Chinese Cinderella

Continuing with the Chinese series, last night I finished reading 'Chinese Cinderella'. It is an easy to read and touching sort of book. When I read the back cover, I noticed something that caught my attention. The book was written to every one that felt unwanted during their childhood. As my father abandoned my mother when she was pregnant with me I sometimes felt like this in my early years, so that was extra encouragement for me to read this book. I soon discovered that this girl's story was way too sad and different from mine. The book also brings up a complex issue, step parents. Having had a step father myself, I knew what the author felt to some extend and I was very touched by the her feelings. Time seems so slow when you are a child and injustice and unfair situations seem to happen on a daily basis. Very recommended book if you are in the mood for it.

There were 2 other things that I enjoyed from the book. First of all the short explanation on how Chinese characters represent the language, like for example the character for business is the combination of the characters of to buy and to sell. There is a huge theory involved on the way this language is written and I think that also has a big influence in the way people think.
Secondly, the bizarre fact that Cinderella, the story we all know as kids, was written 800 years in China before its first appearance in the West.

Wild Swans

Yesterday I finished reading a book called "Wild Swans". It is a thick book that took me a while to finish. At some points I found it over loaded with details but the story is a good seller in these modern times. When I was growing up I was always curious about China. Probably because I enjoyed watching Kung Fu, the tv series, or because the Chinese civilization seemed to me to had been so great and glorious thousands of years ago and suddenly it dimmed out. But mainly because most of the things I got had a label that read "Made in China".

It is the story of a grandmother, a mother and a daughter, it starts in the 1900 and travels all the way up to our times. It went through two world wars, china communist, the great leap forward, the cultural revolution and more than anything Mao. It was very interesting to learn how communism evolved in China and how Mao got to be one of the worst tyrants humanity has seen and yet know so little about. It is unbelievable to think the extend that people's lives were controlled, with the unending self-criticism meetings and Mao influencing people to believe little by little he was a god. It is also very impressive how the power passed on from generation to generation, by punishing the ones that were on power at the time so chaos could not stop. Destruction of spirit and torture power were given to kids so they could get rid of their teachers and other regional leaders. The constant fight to find capitalis-roaders and the total eradication of education made the chinese suffer countless tragedies because of the ideology of only one person.

I wonder if we will always be the puppets of our governments?

Twenty Something
